Research projects

Through phylogenetic comparative approaches, my aim is to try to identify the various factors that might have been involved in the evolution of flower form and pollen.

In collaboration with Beatrice Albert at ESE, I study the diversity of microsporogenesis (male meiosis) in flowering plants, in order to understand how this diversity is distributed and how it has evolved. I have a special interest in monocots and basal angiosperms, which display a remarkable diversity in the features of microsporogenesis. I try to identify potential contraints that may have directed the evolution of microsporogenesis features and I am also interested in the relationship between microsporogenesis and pollen aperture type, since the number and position of apertures (thinner areas of the pollen wall) are determined during male meiosis.

In collaboration with Catherine Damerval at Le Moulon, I study the evolution of selected floral traits using phylogenetic approaches, focusing on the perianth and the androecium in Ranunculales and in palms. We have shown that transitions from actinomorphy to zygomorphy typically occur from an ancestral floral type displaying few stamens. I am also interested in the evolution of stamen number across angiosperms, with a special interest in palms which display an amazing range of variation in their androecium.

I am also involved in projects related to urban ecology. In collaboration with Isabelle Dajoz (iEES Paris) and Bruno Colas at ESE, we look at the effect of urbanisation on plant-pollinator communities (project BUZZinPARIS).

Last, I am partner in the PLANTEVOL project lead by Françoise Hennion (ECOBIO, Rennes) (Plant biodiversity in subantarctic islands: evolution, past, and future, in changing environments), in which I examine how the environment may influence floral and pollen morphology in the three Ranunculus species present in the Kerguelen islands.
